Welcome to holding the space

"I am Paula Marije Clegg, a skilled and experienced counsellor, offering warm, compassionate support for individuals and couples of all ages, from young adults to the elderly. I chose to call my counselling practice ‘holding the space' to reflect how my way of relating therapeutically – being present, open and authentic – creates a safe environment for the client, ‘holding' them as they explore their issues and move towards healing."

I work with clients either in-person, from my Practice room in central Exeter, or online. I enjoy supporting clients in improving how they connect in their relationships with others, and with themselves. By focusing on developing a secure sense of self you can also enhance your connectedness to others.

As a qualified counsellor I can help with:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • stress
  • anger
  • low self-esteem & confidence
  • relationship issues including family and couples
  • trauma
  • attachment loss
  • bereavement
  • identity
  • life transitions
  • inner child work
  • emotional regulation
  • techniques for calming the nervous system

The type of counselling I offer is "relational" which means that the safe, supportive relationship between the client and counsellor is an essential part of the process.

If a client feels accepted and understood they are able to gain a greater understanding of past and present issues, and to feel empowered to make positive changes in areas where they are stuck.

In developing this therapeutic relationship I bring acceptance and sensitivity to who you are in the moment, and how you are feeling. In this way the relationship can safely 'hold' emotions and thoughts that are usually pushed away out of fear or pain, allowing them to be explored and gradually integrated.
